Heh. The altitude here is around 6000 feet. I still smoke.
I may just buy a freaking oxygen mask dispenser thingy, for my inevitable collapse. I beat my initial altitude sickness, months ago, with minimal ill effects. Two weeks of general fatigue and dizziness, if I stood up to fast. Which I did all the freakin' time. Cheapest hippie crack I ever had. Free! Okay, it wasn't really like nitrous but, the wooziness part was.
I think, for my sport, I need a big set of stairs. I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't the fastest or second fastest person on the field, either team. This aging thing is...so humbling. Who woulda thought seven years of whiskey and cigarettes, little to no exercise(unless you count chasing women of questionable virtue) and sleeping in the daytime would lead me to this path of physical ruin? I mean, I haven't gained any weight but, it seems like every muscle in my body turned into pizza dough. Not cool, not cool.

I have always found you naturally strong. Genetics perhaps. You are lucky and gifted in that area. What about simply cutting cigarette and alcohol consumption in half for 30 days and seeing where you are at the end of that time? Something tells me you'll be amazed if/when you do.

Illiotic Band Syndrome. www.jeffgalloway.com/training/injuries.htmlCouple of ten milers this week, and my knee seizes up with crippling pain and I have to stop. Fortunately I'm not competing for anything, so I'm under no pressure to do anything that will complicate the issue more. Could be simply mechanical- wrong kind of shoes, or keeping to the same side of the road for too long. Going to give it a day's rest, and give it a go switching sides and possibly attempt the infamous barefoot taste test.

Sister just showed me how to do it. You REALLY have to get up on your toes like a gay deer. Leg cramps and all that crap subsided, but I still wasn't able to do it long because it felt so unnatural and forced. (Which is ironic because its actually how you're supposed to have been doing it all along.) This is going to take some work.

Kind of like running uphill, but all the time, even if you're not.

Brer, Barefoot Ken Bob has been running barefoot for decades. Maybe check out his site regarding form etc. as he recommends you do not start running up on your toes per se. He's down to earth and knows what he's talkign about. therunningbarefoot.com/?p=1531#solutionPS Not sure if I did it when I ran barefoot (wrong?), but somehow I broke a toe that is now permanently tilted and I hurt another toe.

Went four miles today, on the balls of my feet, w/o any real problem. Lingering knee issue but it didn't really stop me, and I expect to make a real breakthrough some time this week. Also cutting back on the booze a bit, as my weight shot up rather quickly as soon as i wasn't getting the same kind of mileage in.

Training for a half-marathon on June 18th. A typically, notoriously hot half-marathon... Since it was so hot today I figured I'd give the full twelve miles a go for the very first time. I very nearly made it.

Race is this week. No running in the days leading up; just pushups, core stuff, maybe some tennis. Don't want to beat myself up on the road. Stay tuned for the full report...

Dude, that's great to hear you are running a 10-miler, and in the gay deer style! I have been running too...I ran four miles last week...trying to get to my previous best of six...also suffer knee issues. I get a twinge, yes a twinge in the right knee that is bothersome. Fortunately I have found a nice rubber track near that takes away a lot of the impact....

Two and a half hours. I ran pretty steadily till halfway or so, and had to stop and walk, jogging intermittent intervals till the end. My sister finished forty five minutes ahead of me and ran the last mile with me, for which I was split between feeling grateful and wishing she'd piss off ;D It was very hot and the course was hilly with lots of steep ups and downs. My stomach sloshed around for most of it because I'd made the mistake of thinking it would be a good idea to eat cereal ahead of time and that I'd metabolize it as i eased into the race. "Gay deer" didn't really survive past mile seven because my feet felt all shredded and blistered, though in truth it wasn't so bad. In my heart I feel like this is the right way to run so I might yet figure it out. The worst part or running this was being last or having to walk long stretches with absolutely no one else around. Just you and your thoughts, and how much you suck . But it was a serious race with serious racers and I am for the forseeable future an amateur.

Dude, badass. Period.
And yeah, if you're going to eat before a big run, try a few spoonfulls of peanut butter a few hours before. I hear that works.
